Entry #52

A Short Fast Ride
by Catherine Trizzino

Another argument. I head for my Harley - my salvation. A short fast ride should cure what ails.

I see her on the side of the road about ten miles into my ride. Under a slice of the moon’s light I can see she is gorgeous.

I slow the bike and she looks my way.

“Hop on,” I say. Aware that Jenna won’t forgive me if she finds out. Unable to stop the wheels in motion.

She gets on the bike and wraps her arms around me. Her body radiates warmth, rivaling the heat from the Harley’s engine.

“I’m, Mike,” I say.

“Destiny.”

“Great name.”

She says nothing. Just squeezes me tighter. I’ve never cheated. Not even close. Don’t think I will tonight either, but damn this feels good.

I think about Jenna. Our lives have been intertwined forever. I still love her. I always will.

I slow the bike down. I know what I need to do.

She begins to kiss my neck and I start to pull away, but it is too late. The cold blade touches my neck.

Intense pain floods me and my last thought is of the woman I love.

No one can escape destiny. So we must appreciate what we have, when we have, for however long that we have it. What an eloquent way to evoke thoughts.

What a great reminder to appreciate and not abuse the things we truly love. Glad you didn't go for the werewolf or zombie solution. This is so much more thought provoking. I enjoyed the read.

It was a test, and he failed. Doh! And to think he was going to do the right thing. Nice easy read this.

Goes to show, even giving a little into temptation can ruin your life...or in this case, take it.

good reading.

Hitchhikers always make great reads; they're so unpredictable.

Icy touch.

Christine - I particularly enjoyed the narrative as an internal dialogue. We see all the action and his reaction to it. I'm sad that Mike's realisation that he loved Jenna too much to cheat never was spoken but it made for great reading,

can't escape her, for sure....

A moment's temptation with deadly consequences. I found it particularly poignant, as Scott said, that he was about to come around.

Great use of her name, too. Very readable, with a taut, chilling end. Nice work!

I love that "Destiny" is her only word. Is she uttering her name or her explanation? Great inner and outer tale.

Hi laughingwolf, sarah and missy. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! And, missy, the answer is 'both' ;)

I always suspected that Destiny could be cruel. I see that I was right.

Fast-moving and engrossing read. I didn't expect the twist at the end. Nice job.

Very poignant piece with an icy twist.

Well done!

It's settled. Picking up hitchhikers on a bike is a bad idea. Very well paced and written. High marks overall.
