Entry #144

Looking for Fun
by Liz Liadis

Hi, my name is Charles Reginald Othello Williams. My friends call me C.R.O.W. for short. I'm looking for some adventure today. Have you seen any?

I'm planning on either flying to London. I haven't met Big Ben yet. Or, going to Rome to do what the Romans do. What is it they do anyway? Hope it's something fun.

Perhaps I'll go to a luau in Hawaii. Although I might be considered a delicacy there.

Some of my peeps have given me a bad rap. Not all of us black birds like to eat roadkill.

I'm really more refined since I'm from France. I enjoy escargot and brie (that's aged to perfection) with a bit of cabernet sauvignon or champagne. Bon appetit!

Possibly I'll fly to the states, since I have heard Wisconsin has cheese that may be as good as in my homeland. Also, I could meet Larry Bird or Tony Hawk while I'm there. They are legendary!

Maybe, I'll fly back and see ma mere and mon pere. They probably miss their son since I caught a travel bug a few years ago. I have to admit it was delicious.

Anyways, I can go wherever I want since I'm as free as a bird. Oh wait, I AM a bird.

Perhaps on your travels you'll meet Huginn and Meuninn who always roost in a weeping pine at the top of my street...

Very cute story Liz. I think you're getting the hang of these contests. :)

I was lucky enough to have you read this one out loud to me, though, which was even better.

Made me think of James Herbert's 'Fluke'

Except in this case it's a bird who thinks he's a man...or a man who thinks he's a bird.

Well enjoyed that!

I love this! Witty and light...perfect anecdotal antidote for all the eyeball eating scavengers!

A pleasure to read. Nice job!

I love this sooooo verrry much!

I was smiling throughout the piece. To make one laugh is still easy, but smile- thats real tough!

Though I did laugh at "I caught a travel bug a few years ago. I have to admit it was delicious." ;) Very cheeky. Very very good!

Thank you so much for reading my story and all the nice comments. I'm glad that you liked it.

I wrote in this voice so my daughter would be able to read it and laugh. And, now she's quoting it! :)

Funny! Liking the idea of a gourmet crow. A little case of confused identity here? :-)

This was a pleasant read. I've been down that lonely road of reading, that sometimes you end up in a very bad place. Nice interpretation of the photograph.

Travel bug - hah!

Love the clever use of cliches. This is a very fun piece.

I loved this line... "They probably miss their son since I caught a travel bug a few years ago." :) Well played!

my caveat

Something I Would Keep

Liz! I thought little Mr. T wasn't sleeping well? How can you write so well on sparse sleep? I'm highly impressed.

Something I Might Tweak

I would take away the very last line and let the reader fill it in herself.

This made me hungry—where's my brie and champagne? I do so love it when I can savor a writers' words: My favorite being Hemingway in Paris dipping up the grease of sausage with a bit of bread in A Moveable Feast. Quite a tasty morsel you've served, Liz.
