Somedays

Somedays aren't yours at all
They come and go as if they're someone else's days
They come and leave you behind someone else's face
And it's harsher than yours
And colder than yours

They come in all quiet, sweep up, and then they leave
And you don't hear a single floorboard creak
They're so much stronger than the friends you try to keep
By your side

Her voice is so instrumental and the composition so descriptive, I never really listened to the words. Mr. Right went on a business trip to CA this week and left me in the cold. I feel exactly like this because I am angry with him, and I don't want to be. These verses soothed me today with clarity. Thanks.

From this and the previous "On the Radio" reference, I'd bet you're a big Regina fan. My daughter (17) is crazy about her. She has a beautiful voice and a completely unique sound. I can always tell when my daughter comes in humming one of her tunes, even though I haven't listened to her enough to know the words to her songs.

The photograph really evokes the same kind of weary dissonance of Regina's lyrics. Looking out the car window, and all you see is distance, unfriendly attachments.

Off to hunt for this song...

Okay, that was awesome.

She reminds me of Joni Mitchell, and a little of Tori Amos, too. Lovely.

Thanks for turning me on to someone new! :)

I've been playing Begin To Hope with the bonus tracks almost exclusively on my daily commute for the last month and a half.

I have never heard of her/this song, but I'm off to check it on YouTube.

Missy, I'm not glad that you're feeling what you're feeling, but since you are anyway, I'm glad that my urge to post this eased it a bit.

Kaycie, there are things about Regina that I don't find in anyone else. In that regard, yes, I'm a big fan. When you see her play the piano, she is obviously gifted. What amazes me in how she joins her musical skill (sometimes avante garde in form) with very visceral, stream of consciousness poetry. I aspire to that kind of open freedom.

Sarah, thank you for recognizing the photo. It was an important piece of this post. Sometimes it's most comfortable for me to show an emotion through visual/musical impressions and mood and let people see it that sumbliminal way, instead of simply describing it. Glad that you mentioned Tori. I never thought I'd say this, but Regina is like a more earthy, expressive version of Tori.

Versper, very cool!

Wavemancali, respect. Another great album. Some of those lyrics have shown up here, and will show up the future, I'm sure.

Szelsofa, she definitely deserves a listen.

Billy, thanks! In addition to the fading light and color, I really like the diminishing towers and the lines stretching into the distance. It gives the feel that weak connections don't matter. What matters is who chooses to stand with you.

Christine, and perhaps disappointments. Leona Helmsley avatar, eh? Yikes. ;)

Ello, she's very fresh and original.

Vinny, welcom. Very cool that NE Pennsylvania forests are your inspiration!

Anti-Wife, seems like quite a few people related. I'm not sure I expected that. It's nice to find commonality.

I feel this, Jason...
Great photo!
I've never listened to Regina Spektor (what an interesting name!) - I shall have to seek her out now. Thank you!

Vesper, the pain of a quiet want hardening you. I like how Regina captured it. In the music too.

Maybe it's about fatigue, about the need to rise up and once again take control of our days.
