Ruby Throbs
by Tanushree Vachharajani
The cork pops open. The first breath of air soaked in the flavour of wine. Watching it pour out into the glass as it splashes. Liquid rubies. Feel it burn down my throat, slide down to my stomach, make me hungry. Want more than food. I hold out my glass for more. My feet tingle. My palate throbs. My gums hammer. My head spins. The phone rings. I ignore it. Happy fuzz grows in the crevices of my brain. I climb onto the ledge for a better view. I reach out. The city lights melt into my eyes.
Another rainy Tuesday in Bombay.

Huh. So much in so few words. Love the picture you're painting here.
i'd jump too, after drinking that cheap wine ;)
"Happy fuzz" is a great term! This reads like a poem to me. I liked it!
It is so hard to get good wine in India. I tried and was completely unsuccessful. If you could find it, it would be like rubies I think.
Minute details lead to more pressing issues. I'm guessing the pavement was involved. Sad ending.
Maximum impact with few words. No pun intended.
Really well executed idea. I really enjoyed your entry, Tanushree.
I liked the plot.
Sadly its more floody than rainy in Bombay these days.
I may be dense but the picture I see has no jumping or pavement involved; the rest of the picture, however, is quite vivid, with the rain, the lights, and the ever-present wine :-)
Great picture.
Rough day in Bombay.
I'm with Terri. I didn't see any fall here, only someone reaching to touch the rain.
I didn't see a fall, either. I like the image of the city melting, Tanushree. Short, Staccato. Succint. You did what you set out to do.
Tanu,
You packed in a lot with awesome economy in words...
Loved it... I loved the way you ended it too... most people would have expected her to jump... you leave it to the reader... lovely...

It seems to me like he did jump? But I'm not so sure now. Nice stream of consciousness.
Tanushree - I think that you managed an enormous amount with so few words. I love the stream of consciousness aspect of the writing. That is after all what drinking alone is like. So many descriptive phrases here that gave me goosebumps - liquid rubies and happy fuzz were particularly satisfying.
Such a big picture painted with such few words. I mean, really few.
Very nicely done.
I really like the stream of consciousness feel here. As I read, I really felt the wine. Awesome!
