Wine, Woman... and No Song
by Tanja Cilia
A glass of red wine
A beaker of warm, salt, tears;
A story of life.
Translucent and pure
Wholesome and untainted too –
Before she met him.
Her cup flowed over
She thought their future was one –
She was mistaken.
She thought he was true;
He enticed her with his wiles –
It was just a bet.
Wine is but grapes’ tears;
Sweet, with an acid bouquet...
The stuff of recall.
One crystal goblet...
One child without a father...
Both shine, in their way.
She treasures her son –
Like a case of vintage wine...
Not comprehending.
Does he know, or care
That she’ll never love again?
Will they meet anew?

I enjoyed your poetry very much! There is a bittersweet note to the ending. It leaves me wondering and hoping for something, though I'm not sure what.
Oh. my. Nice.
beautifully done
like they say, many a slip twixt the cup and the lip...
It posts questions filled with doubt and yet shows character and hope. In all, life in its crude form flows through the piece.
Liked this a lot.
Very personal and full of strong emotion. Nicely done.
No sour grapes here. No love child never meant to be.
The beauty is in the subtlety of this compelling story. Excellently told.
Tanja - I'm so glad to see poetry here! I've been considering whether or not to try the contest in verse. You've done a great job. My favorite lines:
Wine is but grapes’ tears;
Sweet, with an acid bouquet...
The stuff of recall.
Very nice. Love the pacing, the story. Awesome job!
Not into poetry.
Like this.
Nice one. Thank you.
Maybe I should be?
Four Dinners x
Remarkable, every verse 5-7-5, right? (I only counted a few of them.)
My favorite bit:
One crystal goblet...
One child without a father...
Both shine, in their way.
Wine is but grapes’ tears;
Sweet, with an acid bouquet...
I love that. So pretty.
I have tasted that wine! very nice!
Full bodied with a bittersweet finish. Nice!
One crystal goblet...
One child without a father...
I was so touched by these lines.
"Wine is but grapes’ tears"
and
"She treasures her son –
Like a case of vintage wine"
You have a poetic soul!
I really like the pacing of this poem - how it takes you slowly and evenly through each thought.
She thought he was true;
He enticed her with his wiles –
It was just a bet.
So incredibly cruel and yet it is the reason that she should not waste her time on regret.
Am I right? Is each verse a haiku?
nicely done
Yes, they are haiku - my favourite form of expression.
Thank you for the beautiful comments; I am touched.
Tanja
I love the structure of this. Something very curious and hard hitting about those third lines.
