Entry #2

Verre De Vin
by Christine Gillam

Ah! To drown my sorrows in a glass of wine!
And dream of love that once was mine.
He once held me close and brushed my cheek
Gentle strokes that brought me peace.
We made a promise nay, a vow.
But what good does that do me now?
He left and swore he would return
The painful truth now in me burns.
His ship went down in the rolling sea
Even his body is lost to me.
Our friends, our families offer regrets
But none of that has helped me yet.
So, here I sit, desolate and sad
As I refill my empty glass.
I close my eyes and beg God for reprieve
I hear a noise then stare in disbelief
For there he stands in front of me!
Is this a dream? Have I joined thee?
No, he says, I’m flesh and bone.
I vowed I’d never leave you alone.
I run to his arms, he holds me tight
And I thank the Lord for one more night.
One glass of wine now turns to two
To toast a love forever true.
He holds me close, brushes my cheek
His gentle touch lulls me to sleep.

And we already have our first poetry!

I liked this piece a lot. The story flows very elegantly through the words and all the emotions are embedded beautifully. Very nicely paced too.

My fav. line was
'One glass of wine now turns to two
To toast a love forever true.'

Great work!

This is the ultimate true love: to come back from the dead (in whatever form) and share some wine with your mate.

I just remembered why I don't usually like poetry- very seldom is it done as well as this piece. To write a touching, thorough story meets the challenge. To do it as a poem and this well truly shows your talent. The bar has been set!

Nice one, I really enjoyed it. It had an classic feel to it, kind of Victorian.

I always believe that writing a poem is difficult but as i was reading yours it seems to be flowing so easily. Good work:)

Beautifully written! It was very easy to read, and I felt closer and closer to the narrator the further into the poem I read.

My favorite line was also:
'One glass of wine now turns to two
To toast a love forever true.'

I love rhyming poetry, but it's very hard to pull off - and you did a great job with it.

Great work.

I'd love to know how it came to be... his ship went down, but he returns...

I do like the parallel of gentle strokes bringing peace, then gentle touch lulling to sleep.

Rhythm and rhyme are in this piece with flowing charm.

Excellent poetry piece. It reminded me of the Titanic or Pearl Harbor history. Your lines rolled like waves in the ocean.

A poem right from the heart or so it seems. I especially like the line:
"I run to his arms, he holds me tight
And I thank the Lord for one more night."
An lovers thought

I usually never understand poems. But this one really communicated to me. The void created by a companion can be filled by none. Time is the only true cure. But a glass of wine surely relieves pain for a short while.

Beautifully captured!

Always glad to read a piece of poetry! The reunification via the magic of wine is a lovely finish.

I don't know how he comes back to life or if he does, but I'm glad he seems to!
I've had a couple myself already, so I'm even more inclined to the beauty of your post. Thanks.

Oh I love a man who keeps his promises - even when he's supposed to be dead.
