Entry #17

Chameleon
by Roger Dale Trexler

The past lay behind me, miles away.

The future, just ahead, looms.

Somewhere out there, she awaits me. I can feel her drawing me closer, calling me. She will be the one to heal this wounded heart that beats within my chest. She will be my womb, my comfort, my panacea.

All I have to do is find her.

My true love.

The road to her is dark and lonely.

Like my soul.

The nights we shared in each other’s arms still linger in my thoughts. They always do….and that is why I search.

So many times, I thought I’d found her. Like a chameleon, she changed. I look past the transformed exterior and see her. Her eyes do not lie. They always betray her.
Every time I find her, she loves me….but only for a while. Then, she finds someone new, and leaves. It always breaks my heart.

I ride off into the sunset. We are travelers, she and I, born to traverse the great distances of the heart. The highway is our home. We travel down separate roads, always looking for one another. I can only hope the next fork in the road takes me to her.
I throttle up in anticipation.

Around the next bend, that is where I will find her.

My travels will end when I reach her, I tell myself. She will love me forever.

The highway won’t be so lonely with her at my side.

This time, I will be complete.

Sadness permeates this despite the hope (or is it yearning?) and the continued journey seems one of despair. Good stuff

I don't know if you intended it, but this makes a nice intro to what could be a lot of stories. It's almost like the pilot of a series. He's on the road, searching, and the search will bring him into contact with many folks.

Great line that tell us a lot about your main character.

Excellent read

Charles,

You're absolutely right. This could be the pilot to a series of stories. Sadly, I doubt I'll pursue that....not enough time. Maybe I'll start a blog where other writers can tell the continuing story of our heroes search for love? Who knows.

Thanks for the intro to Wayne's book, by the way. Don't know if I ever thanked you for it. Roger

This really reminds me of a book I'm reading: A Bridge Across Forever, by Richard Bach. It's about the search for his soulmate.

I love the idea of their roads eventually intersecting. Of finding completion with another person. Very beautiful, honest writing.

The search for love can be both lonely and hopeful. The certainty that our own soulmate is out there waiting for us, both a glittering promise and a curse. You have captured this dichotomy to a tee. Gorgeous writing

Lovely, lovely piece.

True love is worth the search. I would like to know if your character finds that love. Nice job.

Very poetic. I could feel his pain as he searches for his love. -Rita

Hope is one heck of a motivator, but sometimes you have to take the blinders off. :)

It is sad, with this lonely, hopeless character, for to me, he is..
Well written!

Oh, the perils of Pauline.
I hope he does not give up.
Someday, somehow, someway...that's what I live by.

good job writing this

oh yes, do expand on this....

What a sad story, but I don't feel that he is hopeless on the contrary.

Great work

I hope he finds what he's looking for.

Wow. That's a vision that can only torture him. A single, real woman who's there when the love is there, then flits away when the love erodes. That woman does exist, but unfortunately only in his needful mind. Good pacing.
